Independent Software Support for MS-DOS 6 Page 2
New Products Designed to Take Advantage of MS-DOS 6
In conjunction with the launch of MS-DOS 6, Symantec Corporation,
Central Point Software Inc., Fifth Generation Systems, PC-Kwik,
Addstor and Vertisoft Systems are announcing products that take
advantage of the new features in MS-DOS 6.
Symantec/Peter Norton Computing
Symantec Corporation is introducing several new software products
that are not only compatible with MS-DOS 6, but also provide
additional features that add value to the functionality of
MS-DOS 6. The new products, all of which are available are: new
versions of The Norton Utilities, with enhanced data recovery for
MS-DOS 6; The Norton Backup (a subset of which is included in MS-
DOS 6); and The Norton Desktop for Windows, which increases
productivity for users of Windows and supports Windows for
Workgroups.
The Norton Utilities' support for MS-DOS 6 uniquely provides data
recovery, protection and optimization of compressed data and
completely supports the new MS-DOS 6 memory manager and the
compressed drive format. Its SpeedDisk feature lets users
defragment files on MS-DOS 6 compressed drives, and its Norton
Disk Doctor feature recovers and automatically repairs data from
damaged MS-DOS 6 compressed files, including files up to two
gigabytes in size. The Norton Backup, which is also included in
The Norton Desktop for Windows, is the only backup utility that
can read and restore backups created by MS-DOS 6 and vice versa.
The Norton Utilities has an SRP of $179. The Norton Backup has an
SRP of $149. And, the Norton Desktop for Windows has an SRP of
$179. For more information on Symantec's product, please contact
Steve Dewitt at 1-(800) NORTON-1.
Central Point Software, Inc.
In addition to providing its award-winning anti-virus technology
for MS-DOS 6, Central Point Software, Inc. has announced a new
product designed specifically for the needs of users of the MS-
DOS 6 operating environment. Safe Six provides users with an
updated version of the
MS-DOS 6 anti-virus program. It detects over 300 more viruses
than the version included in
MS-DOS 6. Safe Six also includes a subscription for two future
updates to the MS-DOS 6
anti-virus program.
Safe Six SRP will be available in Q2 1993 at a U.S. SRP of
$64.95. For more information please contact Mark Stuyt at (416)
890-8040.
PC-Kwik Corporation
PC-Kwik Corporation today announced new versions of its MS-DOS
performance utilities,
PC-Kwik Power Pak version 3.1 and Super PC-Kwik 5.1. All the PC-
Kwik Power Pak accelerators, including Super PC-Kwik, the award-
winning disk cache, work seamlessly with the new Microsoft MS-DOS
6 data protection tools. The new versions of PC-Kwik Power Pak
and Super PC-Kwik will ship in mid-May. They also feature CD-ROM
support for the Super PC-Kwik disk cache.
The new PC-Kwik versions provide automatic detection of
DoubleSpace disk compression so there is no need for the user to
manually configure the cache or disk optimizer to work with
DoubleSpace. KwikBoot, Power Pak's multiple boot configuration
utility, is also fully compatible with the MS-DOS 6 new multi-
config feature, so the user can easily switch between the two.
Existing Power Pak 3.0 users can upgrade to the new version for
$34, plus shipping and handling. Users of earlier versions of
Power Pak can upgrade to version 3.1 for $60, plus shipping and
handling. Super PC Kwik users can upgrade to version 5.1 for
$34. Please contact John Davis at (503) 644-5644 for more
information on PC-Kwik and its products.
Vertisoft Systems
Vertisoft Systems Inc. has announced the release of SPACEMANager,
a new program for compression and compression management for MS-
DOS 6. Its exclusive features make it ideally suited as the
professional choice for MS-DOS 6 DoubleSpace users desiring more
disk space, selective file compression, greater file
compatibility, easier management of compressed files and accurate
free-space reporting.
For MS-DOS 6 users who want to manage DoubleSpace files,
SPACEMANager allows users to actively select different
compression levels for files. Its SuperMount feature provides
instantaneous access to compressed files on floppy disks, Syquest
cartridges, Bernoulli cartridges and floptical media. Its
SuperExchange lets users easily share all DoubleSpaced diskettes
with systems using older versions of MS-DOS. The SpaceMonitor
feature makes viewing both compressed and uncompressed space
available on any fixed or removable disk easy in both
MS-DOS and Windows environments. Its FortuneTeller feature
provides reports of remaining free space on a drive.
SPACEMANager's SRP is $119.95. For more information on both
SPACEMANager and Vertisoft, please contact Anatoly Tikhman at
Vertisoft Systems at (415) 956-5999.
Fifth Generation Systems
Fifth Generation Systems' entire DOS product line is compatible
with MS-DOS 6. Products include: Fastback Plus DOS,
Untouchable, Direct Access, DiskLock, Here & There, Search &
Destroy, S.A.F.E., Brooklyn Bridge, Pyro! and File Director.
Future versions of Fastback Plus will allow users to restore
backups made with MS-DOS 6, along with all previous versions of
Fastback Plus. Please contact Richard Miller at
(504) 291-7221 for more information about Fifth Generation
Systems and its products.
Addstor
Addstor Inc's DoubleTools allows users of MS-DOS 6's DoubleSpace
compression to view and manage compressed drives with ease.
DoubleTools offers users Universal Data Exchange, which allows
DoubleSpace diskettes and other removable media to be read from
and written to machines that don't have DoubleSpace installed.
It provides support for Windows with extensive graphic displays
and controls. It also gives users background defragmentation,
automatic mounting of removable media such as floppy disks, and
increases the efficiency of archiving and communicating
compressed data. This is tied together with a help facility
called the Advisor, which solves complex compression issues
(e.g., dealing with fat entries, low compression space, low
defragment space) for the DoubleSpace user.
The SRP for DoubleTools will be $139.95. It is due to be released
in 2Q 1993. For more information contact Tom Russell at Addstor
at (415) 688-0470.
